Training the trainer

Overview - Elements of this syllabus are subject to change.

This 3 -day OR 1 day instructor-led course aims to equip the attendee with a range of skills designed to assist them in avoiding poor trainer delivery, bad course feedback and expectations failing to be met.  

Audience
The primary audience for this course are individuals who are new to training course delivery. 
The secondary audiences for this course are individuals that have some training course delivery and require a refresher.

At Course Completion*

  • Have a workable training course lesson plan
  • Be able to capture the attention of any group of attendees irrespective of mood and generate buy in and commitment to the course
  • Be able to deliver a training course and achieve the course aims + objectives
  • Able to recognise different learning preferences and deliver to that preference
  • Deliver an effective training course using training resources well such as handouts, flipcharts and PowerPoint
  • Have a range of tools available to assist them in course design and delivery
  • The ability to acquire expectation objectives from sponsor and attendee and post course feedback

Course Outline

Module 1: Pre training course design and prelims - this module aims to help the trainer establish must have, should have and nice to have course content that is prioritised to meet both needs and wants of both the sponsor (usually the employing company) and the course attendee. It also addresses the needs and wants as required by all parties with a look at the importance of Maslow's hierarchy of needs.
Module 2: Questioning and listening skills - this module aims to provide the trainer with a range of questioning, listening and other trainer skills designed to provoke thought, interaction and commitment to the learning process, it also includes planting the seed technique. 
Module 3: Trainer behavior + performance - this module aims to address the unofficial code of conduct trainers should abide by, using stories, metaphors and anecdotes, listening to your vision, and how to deal with the 3 types of course attendee in particular training course interruptions or attendees who are negative influences.  The module also explores trainer appearance, tone of voice, trainer checklists, what if's and how to recover from trainer emergencies.
Module 4: The lesson plan - this module provides all the information needed to co create a highly effective lesson plan and tools that when used will help avoid a badly delivered training session includes the INTRO model for kick starting the training session.  
Module 5: How and why people learn - this module explores Kolb and Buzans work and takes a look at the attendees learning preferences and motivation, included within this module is an exploration around the trainer's motivation and how they can raise their game even if delivering the same course over and over.
In this model we also look at learner agreements and the importance of "buy in".  This module also includes learning tools such as forums, group discussions, mind maps, wiki, twitter, blogs and other web resources.
Module 6: Group Management - this module covers the fundamentals of handling people on the course, learner agreements, code of conduct or ground rules encouraging both individual or team commitment to learning and co-operation
Module 7: Training Environment - this module looks at the WAAAL model in trainer deliver style, looking at tools that work and some that don't exploring why some trainers send attendees to sleep whilst others capture and build on connection.  
Module 8: Resource Management - this module helps the trainer examine the importance of support material management, the use of handouts, flipcharts and presentation tools like PowerPoint.
Module 9: Evaluation - this module aims to address the subject of evaluation going beyond Kirkpatrick's long standing model allowing the trainer to finish not only on a high having done a good job well but creating the environment and moment for reflective learning among attendees.
Module 10: Legal responsibilities - this module covers the must have and should have aspects of training responsibility including data protection, health and safety, manual handling and risk assessment.

*Post course support is available along with coaching / mentoring through the attendees first training course delivery.
